Biennal Prize of Engraving and Etching

“Sandro e Marialuisa Angelini”

FOURTH EDITION, 2012

Art.1 Accademia Carrara presents in 2012 the fourth edition of Engraving “Sandro e Marialuisa Angelini” Biennial Prize, which has been set up, according to the wishes of Sandro Angelini, by his sons Luì, Piervaleriano, Leonardo.

Art.2 The Prize aims at celebrating the memory of Sandro Angelini (1915-2001), architect, artist and promoter of many cultural events, a long standing member of Accademia Carrara’s Board of Directors, of Associazione Amici dell’Accademia, and engraving tutor at the school of the Academy itself. The Prize is also meant to celebrate the memory of Angelini’s wife, Marialuisa (1925-1988), an artist who shared the same cultural interests as her husband’s.

Art.3 The prize is promoted by a Committee composed by Luì, Piervaleriano e Leonardo Angelini, by Accademia Carrara Board of Directors’ Chairman; by the President of Associazione Amici dell’Accademia Carrara; by the Director of Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti; by the Person in Charge of Divisione Accademia Carrara e Galleria Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, by the Director of Istituto Culturale; and the Coordinator of Unità Operativa Accademia Carrara, Registrar.

Art.4 The Biennial Prize is addressed to young artists (maximum age 35) learned in the art of engraving based on traditional techniques, those practiced and loved by Sandro and Marialuisa Angelini (copperplate engraving, lithograph, xylography, and other related techniques), without restrictions as far as subject, size or style are concerned, with no limit to experimental techniques, provided that the character, the manual printing press criteria and the press printing into 50 exemplaries are respected.

Art.5 The Prize will be awarded every other year since 2006 by a specialized Jury through a public ceremony. The names of the people belonging to the jury will be available on the web site http://www.accademiacarrara.bergamo.it three months before the deadline.

Art.6 The jury awarding the prize is made up by: Attilio Steffanoni, as President of the Prize itself, by the Person in Charge of Divisione Accademia Carrara e Galleria Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, by the Director of Istituto Culturale, by the Coordinator of Unità Operativa Accademia Carrara, Registrar; by a member of Angelini’s family and by a modern art professional chosen by the Director of Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti.

Art.7 The Prize winning work (entitled to the amount of 3.000,00 Euros) will be included in the collections of Accademia Carrara. As per unquestionable judgment of the Jury, as an integration to the Prize in money, a personal engraving exhibition to be held in a public place within the following year might be offered to the Winner. To this purpose the Winner is required to produce no less then 15 engravings within 8 months after the prize-giving, so that the actual feasibility of the exhibition can be evaluated.

Art.8 The Prize is open to any Italian or foreign citizen. Each artist has to send his/her work (a maximum amount of two works) before the 15th of March 2013 (date of postmark will prove application) to: Direzione dell’Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti, Piazza Giacomo Carrara 82d, 24121 Bergamo (tel. +39035399563 – fax +39035245442); Reference: “Premio per l’incisione Sandro e Marialuisa Angelini” . The applications will be taken into consideration for a first screening.

Art.9 The works must be unpublished and made up during the two years before the deadline, the works’ printing plates will be liable for reproduction up to 50 copies. The size of the sheet will be included between a minimum of 250 x 350 mm and a maximum of 500 x 700 mm.

Art.10 The works will be sent in a flat structure, made up by two cardboards, without frame, glass or passepartout. The works must not be signed, they will be sent together with two envelops: the first containing the author’s personal details, a copy of his identity card, telephone number and e-mail; the second containing a technical fact sheet of the work itself (title, date, size in millimetres, technique, circulation and any other relevant detail). The authors will declare to be aware of the regulation and to accept it, stating their will to take part to the fourth edition of the Biennial Prize of Engraving “Sandro e Marialuisa Angelini”. Non compliance with the above mentioned rules will result in the exclusion from the competition.

Art.11 The works selected for the competition will be part of an exhibition by Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea dell’Accedemia Carrara di Bergamo. The dates of the exhibition will be published on the site www.premioangelini.org.

Art.12 By receiving the prize, the author gives Accademia Carrara the right to print 50 copies, 10 of which (in Roman numerals) will belong to the author, while the remaining 40 (in Arabic numerals) will be a property, together with the mould, of Accademia Carrara.

Art.13 The Jury will award the prize by the 15th of July 2013. The Jury’s selection will be then published on the site wwwpremioangelini.org. The Jury has the right to choose not to award the prize.

Art.14 All the rejected or not awarded works will be given back to their artists, upon their request and at their expenses.
